MATERIALS: SCROLL DOWN FOR LINKS TO PURCHASE
Thinsulate - 20' x 60" ($250)
Adhesive Spray - 4 24oz cans ($21)
Dynamat Tape- 2 rolls - we could have done without this, we used it in spaces to small for rattletrap but we feel it was a bit unnecessary ($20)
Rattletrap - 200sq feet ($365)
We found that we couldn’t get the thinsulate into the ribs of the van so we picked up some foam spray filler from Home Depo also ($20)
Total cost of insulation - $676
DIY:
There’s no reason to be stuck in the garage for your whole build, we loaded the van with the shopping list above and drove up to the Catskills in New York to do this install. We had a big tarp to lay everything out, we checked the weather so we knew there was no rain and we had lots of space to use the spray glue outdoors.
We rattletrapped first. We found that for the oddly shaped areas in the Mercedes (the least square of all vans it seems) that keeping the backing on the rattletrap and pressing it into the shape made it easier to fit. We sometimes cut pieces to fit then cut them in half to aid in getting behind structural pillars in the van walls. All in all this was an easy job and takes about 2-3 days depending on how crazy you go at it. We finished off a few pieces back on the streets of Brooklyn.
